Also, note that this flatband diagram is not an equilibrium diagram since both electrons and holes can … When the p-n junction is forward biased, the electrons in the n-type material which have been elevated to the conduction band and which have diffused across the junction find themselves at a higher energy than the holes in the p-type material. They readily combine with those holes, making possible a continuous forward current through the junction.
As the diffusion continues, the depletion region begins to form and the energy level of the n-region conduction band decreases. The decrease in the energy level of the conduction band in the n region is due to the loss of the higher nergy electrons that have diffused across the junction to the p region. The behaviour of the PN junction with regards to the potential barrier’s width produces an asymmetrical conducting two terminal device, better known as the PN Junction Diode. A PN Junction Diode is one of the simplest semiconductor devices around, and which has the characteristic of passing current in only one direction only. However, unlike
A p–n junction is a boundary or interface between two types of semiconductor materials, p-type and n-type, inside a single crystal of semiconductor. The "p" (positive) side contains an excess of holes, while the "n" (negative) side contains an excess of electrons in the outer shells of the electrically neutral atoms there. This allows electrical current to pass through the junction only in band diagram of the p-n junction. Figure 4.4 shows the energy-band diagram of a p-n junction under equilibrium. The distance between the Fermi level and the valence and/or conduction bands does not change in the quasi-neutral regions and is the same as in the isolated n-and p-type semiconductors. Inside the space-charge region, the conduction

The band diagram of a p-n and metal semiconductor junctions. Ask Question Asked 2 years, 11 months ago. Therefore a hole in the p-type region of the pn-junction encounters an electrical potential barrier when trying to move into the n-type region. In the band diagrams for the metal contacts with n- and p-type semiconductors, you see from the bending of the vacuum potential energy that in p-njunctions • conduction and valence band edges will line up,while the Fermi level will exhibit a discontinuity at the junction. But now electrons are free to diffuse from the n-region to the p-region,‘pushed’ by the diffusion term D n ∇ n in the DDE. Similarly, holes will be free to diffuse to the n region. As these diffusion processes happen, the concentration of extra

When the p-n junction is forward biased, the electrons in the n-type material which have been elevated to the conduction band and which have diffused across the junction find themselves at a higher energy than the holes in the p-type material. They readily combine with those holes, making possible a continuous forward current through the junction. 2017-10-05 · In this lecture, i discussed about the energy band diagram of the pn- junction in equilibrium. However, unlike Schottky diode can switch on and off much faster than the p-n junction diode. Also, the schottky diode produces less unwanted noise than p-n junction diode. These two characteristics of the schottky diode make it very useful in high-speed switching power circuits.
